Using weeds to tell you something....

As the weather warms up, our vegetables are growing quickly, and so too are the weeds.   Before pulling them out, consider looking to them to understand the state of your soil.  Remember that soil is your everything, take care of it, and it will take care of your plants.  Here are some common weeds and what they say about your soil:

1.     Purslane- Soil has very high potassium, magnesium, iron, copper, low calcium, and phosphate

2.     Crabgrass- Low calcium.
3.        Ground Ivy- Good calcium, good air content, good organic breakdown.

Next post will be a more exhaustive list! (since this post is just a 1, 2, 3 view :)  )

So glad you posted this! Any ideas on what to do about tons of clay?? Our property seems to be filled with clay- it feels like it's nearly impossible to dig it up! You could almost make pottery with it! :-)
Any help would be appreciated!

Hey Freespirit! GYPSUM.....apply it where you want to loosen up the soil. Gypsum negatively attracts soil particles, so it will help. You also need to apply alot or organic materials where you want to plant. Remember, for every 6 inches of compost you add, it will compost down 2 inches into your existing soil. Are you looking to plant more veggies or for other plants? thanks for the comment!

I thought Perslane was edible and delicious and one of the best green things one could eat

g'day Richard- Yes, purslane is an amazing plant that is a 'wild edible' that is great for cooking in soups, stir fries etc. Remember a weed is anything you don't want in the garden, so not all weeds are bad! I think the point is that Purslane can thrive in certain soils and they can tell you about your soil. So just because it is labeled a weed here doesn't mean it can't be eaten!
